Question to MovingPlace

from Jerry K. in IL - Monday, May 25, 2020

1) How do I estimate how much space I'll need in the truck? I have a few dozen stackable bins, a couple dozen moving boxes, sectional sofa, 2 upholstered chairs, kitchen table (disassembled), 6 wooden kitchen chairs, an elliptical machine and a fold-able treadmill. Do I measure the bins and boxes - if so, how high can they be stacked? I have numerous ratchet straps and bungee cords to secure the load every few feet, but I need a good way to estimate how many lineal feet based on the width and height of the truck interior. 2) Assuming the truck space is shared, how do you guarantee my items will not be taken by mistake by somebody else if the truck delivers to them first?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Jerry, Great questions. The moving trucks are all 8 feet wide and 9 feet tall inside. The variable is the length. If you measure out a space in your home that is 8ft wide and 9ft tall, you can then get a "feel" for how much length to order. We will also give you a rate for what each additional foot of space will cost if you end up needing a little more on loading day. You will not run out of space! We only haul one household goods shipment on each truck. Your shipment will be the first thing on the truck and will go right against the front wall. Once you are done loading, a bulkhead wall is installed that separates your goods into a "private compartment". We then load general boxed and crated freight at a freight terminal to fill out the truck. Your goods are never left in front of someone else's home nor are they taken off of the truck. We transport the truck to the destination, drop off the boxed freight at a destination freight terminal, and bring the truck to you to unload your household goods. So, when we say that it is a shared truck, we really mean that it is only shared with freight, not other peoples' belongings. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Michele C. in NC - Wednesday, April 29, 2020

I have some furniture items that need to be moved from my moms estate in Alabama to my home in NC. How would I go about finding a shared moving truck space for this

MovingPlace Response

Hi Michele, We can certainly help you with this. We just need to figure out how much space you would need on the moving truck and put together some pricing. You can fill out our quote form for this or feel free to give us a call at 800-876-6839 and we can quickly get your pricing over the phone as well. Thank you for your interest. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Chris S. in MI - Tuesday, April 7, 2020

I have a daughter who has baby items that need to get moved from Cambridge, MA to Grand Rapids, MI, or to St. Louis. It would be quite a small load: stroller, basinette, and some boxes of baby clothes. Could you give me an approximate cost?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Chris, For small loads like this, we recommend shipping everything using UPS ground. That is a better choice. Even on a shared moving truck, our minimum shipment is going to be over $1000 for that move. I imagine you can get that shipped in UPS ground freight for a fraction of that. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Doreen H. in CA - Monday, March 2, 2020

Hi, I am looking for a possible truck who will have some extr space on board for 2 pieces of furniture we want to deliver to IA or MN from CA. Obviously do not want to spend a lot for 2 pieces of furniture.

MovingPlace Response

Hi Doreen, While we do have some options for shared moving trucks, we still have minimum shipment sizes of 4ft x 8ft sections on the moving vans. This is not very cost-effective for moving just a couple of pieces. We suggest the UPS Store when shipping just a few items. They have some ground freight options where they box or crate what you need to ship. It is really quite inexpensive and convenient. Good luck with your move! Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Teri M. in NJ - Tuesday, September 17, 2019

I am looking to move from Merchantville New Jersey to Richmond Virginia by the end of September. I was wondering if there's anyone else out there that is moving to that local area as well my moving date is rather flexible please let me know

MovingPlace Response

Hi Teri, We generally only have one household shipment on each truck. You are the first person to load and your stuff goes in the front. It is separated from the rest of the stuff on the truck by a bulkhead wall. After you are loaded, we take the moving truck to a freight terminal and load boxed and crated freight on the back of it. Unless you order the entire truck, every shipment in our system is a "shared truck". Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from David W. in FL - Wednesday, May 22, 2019

I have two rooms of furniture that need to be moved from Summerfield Florida to Somerset Kentucky. What would the cost be with a shared truck

MovingPlace Response

Hi David, Unless you order the entire moving truck, all of our shipments are on "shared moving vans". That being said, we only put one household goods shipment on each truck. When the truck comes to your home, it will be empty. You load up against the front wall and work your way back. When you are done loading, there is a wall inside the truck that goes up to separate your goods in the "nose of the trailer". We take the truck back to a freight terminal where we load CLEAN boxed and crated freight on the back of the truck (not live chickens and sacks of dirt! Lol). We don't put pricing on the forum because the prices change with seasonality and fuel costs, etc. If you fill out one of our quote forms, we will promptly email or text (your choice) pricing to you. Question to MovingPlace

from Mimi K. in DC - Thursday, May 9, 2019

Do you move two bedrooms of household furniture and kitchen. From Washington, DC 20001 to Houston, Texas 77059. How long it will take and total cost. Thank you. Will we share the load with other that move to the same city?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Mimi, It will take about 5 business days for a long distance move from Washington DC to Houston, TX. We only put one household goods shipment on each moving truck and then fill out the rest of the truck with boxed and crated freight from a local freight terminal. Each household goods shipment gets a private compartment, separated by a plastic wall, to keep your stuff untouched on the moving truck. Unless you order an entire truck for yourself, every shipment that moves through our system is on a shared moving truck, but the share is not with another household goods move, just freight. Question to MovingPlace

from Cheryl H. in CA - Sunday, February 24, 2019

I inherited a few items, (two small trunks and 2 small tables and a couple other items), but they are in Wichita, KS and I live in Roseville, CA. Can they be moved as an add-on to another mover heading this way? If so, when and how long would it take?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Cheryl, We have several different options for shared moving trucks that can handle partial orders like this. Even with a shared moving truck, our cross-country moving transit time is still only 6 days. If you fill out our moving quote form, please list the items that are moving in the comments section so that we know how much space you may need and can email pricing. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Jennifer J. in CA - Tuesday, February 5, 2019

Looking to share the cost of moving with anyone possible. I have only a few items (bed, dresser, utility cabinet) and am getting exorbitant quotes from moving companies. Anyone moving from San Diego (Carlsbad) California to or through San Antonio, Texas?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Jennifer, If you take a look at the other question that was just asked about sharing moving trucks, you can see the logistics of how that service works. We have outstanding rates on shared moving trucks from California to San Diego. If you fill out one of our quote request forms and let us know the approximate amount of stuff that you are looking to move, we will email pricing to you asap. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from James P. in CO - Tuesday, February 5, 2019

I was wondering if anyone could give me the logistics of sharing moving services from state to state. I need a couple of heavy items (weights) transported from PA to CO Thanks! James

MovingPlace Response

Yes James! When using our shared moving truck service, we bring the truck to you first. You load into the very front against that wall. A bulkhead wall goes up to secure your goods in the nose of the trailer and that is where your stuff stays until you take it off of the truck at destination. We fill out the rest of the truck with boxed and crated freight that we put on at our trucking terminal. So your goods are never intermingled or handled when using our moving services. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from GIANNA K. in PA - Monday, November 12, 2018

Hi, I am interested in having custom Kitchen Cabinets transported from FL to PA. Would you be able to give me a price range for something like this?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Gianna, Yes we can. Our minimum shipment is a 4 foot x 8 foot section on the moving van. That should be enough space to ship a full set of custom cabinets or 1 room of furniture if it is loaded properly. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Terry D. in IA - Saturday, September 22, 2018

We are moving to Arizona in a few weeks. We do not have a place set up to move to right now. If we don’t have a place is there somewhere You can store our stuff n then drop it off once we find the right place ??

MovingPlace Response

Hi Terry, Absolutely. We have excellent daily and monthly storage rates. When you need storage, we leave the shipment right on the moving truck and park it at the destination terminal (locked and secured). You just need to give us 48 hours notice and we will arrange to have the moving truck brought out to your new home where you can have up to 3 days to unload it. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Chanele R. in OR - Friday, August 31, 2018

How many days can I have to pack up a 2 bedroom apartment for a self service move from Orlando, Florida to Summerfield, MA?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Chanele, We have a couple of different options for your self service move. For our standard service, we bring the moving truck out to your house and drop it off on Day 1. You would load it up on Day 2, and we would pick it back up on Day 3. If you need more time to load, we could drop it off on a Thursday and pick the truck back up on Monday (at no additional charge). For those that are self-moving that need even more time, we have some options for 1 week loading, etc, but there are some extra charges for that. Those charges vary by location, so the best way to get exact pricing for your exact moving days needed is to call us at 800-876-6839. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from roy c. in CA - Thursday, January 18, 2018

who much would it cost to hire a driver to drive uhaul truck with lite weight sand buggie and trailer in tow from rialto,ca to anchorage Alaska.thank you.

MovingPlace Response

Hi Roy, For self-service (you load, we drive) moves, we provide the truck, fuel, driver, and door to door transport. We do not have drivers that will drive other peoples' rented trucks. We do not have service to Alaska at this time, but should by the end of the summer. Thanks! Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Chris R. in FL - Wednesday, December 13, 2017

Do you offer insurance? Or do we get our own? We have renters insurance. Thanks

MovingPlace Response

Hi Chris, Since we are a self service mover and you are providing the loading and unloading, coverage is going to be limited to catastrophic events, such as a truck accident, fire, etc. If you have a renter's policy, you are more than likely already covered for this. If you do not have any coverage, please give us a call. Depending on where you are moving from and to, we will have some options available for you at a very reasonable price. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Brianna P. in UT - Saturday, September 16, 2017

We are trying to make a self service move from Salt Lake City, UT to Blaine, Minnesota just wondering how this works we have never did this before?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Brianna, Self service moving is easy. We bring a truck out to your home for you to load (we can usually leave the moving truck for up to 3 days, or over a weekend at no additional charge). You load it. We will transport the moving truck to the destination where you will have up to 3 days to unload it. We charge based on the amount of space that you use on the truck, not the weight, so you will not have any surprises for billing). If you fill out our quote form on this page or give us a call at 800-876-6839, we can help you with pricing. Thanks! Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Miguel S. in FL - Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Hi! What would be the best solution, both logistically and economically to ship a medium sized motorcycle and a couple of items from NJ to FL? A "Pod" box perhaps? Thank you in advance.

MovingPlace Response

Hi Miguel, The best idea would be to get a space on a moving truck that is large enough to fit the motorcycle and other items. The self service moving trucks have ramps and you can just drive the motorcycle right up the ramps. There are place inside the truck to secure your goods every 16 inches. Get some heavy straps and you can secure the motorcycle. That will be the cheapest and best way to move what you are moving. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Corey H. in CA - Monday, August 14, 2017

I am making a self service move from San Diego ca to Jacksonville NC in mid October. I need to ship a running 2002 Ford Taurus, queen mattress, box spring w/metal frame, 32" flat screen tv, home computer, and 3 boxes of clothes. Best way and price possible. Any help, would be great thanks!

MovingPlace Response

Hi Corey, You have come to the right place. We can do a self service move for your furniture (where you load and unload and we do everything else). For moving your car, there really is not a self service moving option. The driver will load, unload, and secure your car for you on an auto transporter. If you fill out our quote form, put the make and model of your car in the comments section so our representatives will know to price the car for you. Thanks! Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from janet h. in TX - Saturday, August 5, 2017

I requested a quote to move a 2+ bed house down. all my belongings are in a 25x30 storage bin with a little room left over. I want to do a self service move where I load and unload. thanks

MovingPlace Response

Hi Janet, Self service moving is what we do! We provide the moving truck, fuel, driver, and door to door transport for your self service move. You provide the loading and unloading. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Rosa C. in CA - Sunday, May 28, 2017

Would you be able to provide us with self service moving from West Covina, CA to Nampa, Idaho? How long would it take to receive our stuff? Last time we moved we used a 26 ft truck from uhaul what size would you recommend with your service? We have about the same amount of stuff if not a little less. Thank you in advance!

MovingPlace Response

Hi Rosa, We can certainly help you with a self-service move to Idaho. The 26ft uhaul truck is not as wide nor as high as one of our moving trucks. For comparable space, you would need to order 22 feet of space on one of our moving vans (they are 8.5 feet wide and 9 feet tall). Transit time from California to Idaho is going to be approximately 3 days. We would need to look at when you want to move to be able to determine the best days for loading and unloading. Please give us a call at 800-876-6839 and we can narrow down the details. Thanks! Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Chris K. in CO - Thursday, May 11, 2017

I'm looking to do a self service move from Michigan to Denver CO. I have had a full service mover out who says that it weighs around 4000 pounds? What are my options?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Chris, Self service moving is different from full service in that we charge by the amount of space that is used on the moving truck, not the weight of the shipment. This takes most of the guesswork out of your pricing. We feel that as a consumer, it is darn near impossible to figure out how much your shipment weighs and can set you up for a nasty pricing surprise. But, you can measure out how much space you are ordering and know in advance whether or not the stuff that you are moving will fit in that space. Give us a call and we can help you figure out how much space you may need for your self service move at 800-876-6839. Movingplace

Hi Jose, All of our moves are self service, meaning that we provide the moving truck, driver, and door to door service. The customer provides the loading and unloading. Question to MovingPlace

from carline a. in IL - Thursday, April 27, 2017

MovingPlace Response

Hi Carline, For self service moving, we can work with you to arrange delivery on a specified day. We would need you to call our office at 800-876-6839 and speak to one of our relocation specialists so that we can work that out figuring in the size of shipment, car, etc. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Angela W. in PA - Monday, March 27, 2017

Question to MovingPlace

from Susan B. in VT - Saturday, January 14, 2017

We are trying to move a load of furniture from our home in rural Guilford, VT to our daughter's apt. in Chicago (zipcode 60613). We've been told by "U-Pack" that they can't deliver to that zipcode because of Chicago laws. Is that true for you all too? Is there any way around this issue?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Susan, For self service moving, where you load and unload the truck, there are areas of Chicago where there is no parking allowed on the street. The way around that issue is to do a "live load" or "live unload". That simply means that the driver is going to wait with the moving truck while you load or unload. So, if the truck has to be moved in mid-load, it can be moved. So the real issue is parking, not any goofy Chicago law. If you will give us a call at 800-876-6839, we can work with you to get pricing for your move and figure out the logistics of getting a moving truck to your daughter in Chicago. In the event that even a live load is not available, the next option would be to pick the furniture up at the shipping terminal in Chicago with a smaller truck. Even then, you have the issue of parking that moving truck when you are unloading... Chicago can be interesting! Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from sarah h. in IN - Tuesday, January 3, 2017

I need a large moving truck to move all of my stuff from Indiana to Arizona? I have a 3 Bedroom house that is lightly furnished and we are going to be getting rid of some stuff. How much will it cost? Is everything included? I do not want any surprises. The last time I used a full-service mover and they charged me based on the weight of the shipment. Once they picked everything up and weighed it, they charged me twice as much money as they had quoted. I don't want that to happen again.

MovingPlace Response

Hi Sarah, One of the biggest benefits of moving this way is that you pay for the space used, not how much the stuff weighs. You know exactly how much space that you have on the moving truck and you know exactly how much that it will cost. If you need extra space, you know right up front how much each extra foot of space will cost... there are not surprises. Movingplace

Question to MovingPlace

from Nick J. in VA - Tuesday, February 9, 2016

Hello. I will be moving 1 48 foot trailer's worth of materials once per month, making a full lap of the east US yearly. I normally do it in 2 24 foot pup trailers, but can do it in 1 large trailer (not preferred, but if much difference in cost I'll do it) We have been using another service so far, but I am not satisfied with the service. Could you give me an idea of cost per mile, as a general rule/average? I won't take it as a quote, as I don't have dates, etc. yet (First move will be in about may 1st). If you could give me a ballpark, or some examples of moves you have done already and their costs (just "from this city to that one") that would be great! Thanks much, Nick James

MovingPlace Response

Hi Nick, We would be happy to help you with a quote for your move. Do you need commercial freight service or are you moving household goods? Please give us a call at 800-876-6839 as there are many variables that will affect the rate. We should discuss them to make sure you are getting the right service at the right price. Thanks! Question to MovingPlace

from zen G. in OH - Tuesday, August 12, 2014

We are helping my mom and sister move from ohio to california. Looking for portable storage for us to move their stuff.

MovingPlace Response

Hi Zen, We are similar to portable storage, except we use moving vans for the transportation instead of those big plastic containers. You will get a much smoother transfer of your goods on a moving truck because your stuff is not jostled around being picked up and loaded on flatbed trucks (like it is with storage containers). We saw that you filled out a quote request on the website and have emailed a price quote to you. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks! MovingPlace web team

I have a 4+ bedroom house in Columbia, SC & am moving from to Fargo, ND. I have a few items in a storage garage in MN that I would need added to the moving truck on the way from SC to ND. Is the driver able to make a stop at my storage garage in MN where we would meet the driver to load the additional items onto the moving truck?

MovingPlace Response

Hi Sarah, We can make extra pick ups and deliveries when you have rented the entire moving truck. It sounds like your shipment would qualify for that. If you have not already, please fill out the moving quote form at the top of this page. Note in the comments that you have an extra pickup in MN so our relocation specialist can include that in your pricing. Thanks!

I have to move furniture from a few bars 400 miles. My seemingly best option is to rent a U-Haul truck. How would your rates and service compare to that option?

MovingPlace Response

As a self-service mover, we would bring the moving truck to your location. You load it. We would then take the truck to your destination where you unload it. Our costs will be a comparable to Uhaul, Penske, or Ryder moving truck rentals, but we will offering a lot more service for the money.
